Men's Indoor Track and Field

Student-Athlete Spotlight: Kobe Chandler, UW-Whitewater

Each week during the 2022-23 academic year, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) will feature two student-athletes (one male and one female) from one of its eight institutions for a “Student-Athlete Spotlight” Q & A segment. The segments will be posted every Thursday and individuals are selected by the institution. The WIAC Student-Athlete Spotlights are presented by Culver's.

Name:  Kobe Chandler
Institution:  UW-Whitewater
Hometown (High School):  Beloit, Wis. (Beloit Memorial High School)
Year in school:  Sophomore
Sports:  Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field
Major:  Physical Education

Why did you choose UW-Whitewater?
I chose Whitewater not only because of the great athletics, but because it has one of the best Physical Education programs in the area.

What other clubs/organizations on campus are you involved in?
At the moment, I’m only involved with track, but next year I want to join the HPEA (Health, Physical Education & Adapted PE) Major’s Club.

What causes do you care about?
I care about helping kids who aren’t in the best position, which is why I want to be a teacher. There’s a lot of kids in my hometown (Beloit) who don’t have role models. There aren’t many teachers that look like me either, so I want to go back and teach there for a while. I want to be able to help motivate these students, let them know that they can be successful and hopefully become role models themselves one day.

What do you like most about competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference and being a NCAA Division III student-athlete?
I like that the WIAC is one of the most competitive conferences in the country, and most schools in it have top [track] athletes in the nation that I get to compete against. I also like being a Division III student-athlete, because I get the full athlete experience, while also being in smaller classrooms where I can build strong relationships with instructors.

What is your favorite…
Menu item from Culver’s?  Chicken Tenders w/ Honey Mustard
Flavor of the Day from Culver’s?  Oreo

Food?  Pasta (all of em)
Musical Group/Artist?  Lil Uzi
Professional Sports Athlete/Team?  Lebron/Milwaukee Bucks
Vacation Spot?  Honolulu, Hawaii

What is your greatest sports moment?
My greatest sports moment was probably my junior year of track. Our 4x4 team won conference
and the energy was at an all-time high. Mostly, because it’s the last event, but also because we
were the underdogs and no one expected us to win (except us).

What is your favorite thing to do off the court/field with your teammates?
I like when our whole team supports a different sport. The energy is always amazing, and we get
to have some fun focusing on a different sport than ours.

One word that describes your team?
Family!

One word that describes you?
Spirited.

What is your dream job?

Three things on your "bucket list"?

---Go to Africa.
---Watch the Olympics in person.

A non-athletic talent that you have is?
I can make really good quesadillas.

Do you have any pre-game/pre-event superstitions or rituals? If so, what are they?
Yes, I wear double socks on meet days.
