Kwik Trip Athletes of the Week - April 28

MADISON, Wis.--Following are the WIAC Kwik Trip Athletes of the Week for the week of April 21 - 27.

BASEBALL
Position

Matt Scolan, Senior (Downers Grove, Ill./South), Outfield of UW-Whitewater
Scolan set career marks during the Warhawks' 6-1 week. Against Rockford University (Ill.) on April 22, he broke the WIAC Record for runs in a career, crossing the plate for the 226th time. Then, in the last game of the UW-Stout series, Scolan broke the UW-Whitewater career home run record with his 48th homer as a Warhawk. Throughout the seven games during the week, Scolan batted .452 (14-for-31) with two doubles, a triple, and five home runs. Scolan brought in 10 runs, while rounding 16 times on his own.

Pitcher
Cade Hansen, Junior (New Braunfels, Texas/Smithson Valley), Righthanded Pitcher of UW-Whitewater
Hansen picked up two wins during the week to help the Warhawks to a 6-1 record. In his first appearance, Hansen went 5.0 innings against UW-Oshkosh with five hits and only two earned runs, while fanning three. In his second win of the week against UW-Stout, Hansen went 7.0 innings with only one hit and did not issue a single walk. Hansen recorded 13 strikeouts against the Blue Devils – a career-high and tied for 7th in the Warhawk record book.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Offense
Samantha Hayek, Junior (Scandia, Minn./Forest Lake), Attack of UW-River Falls
Across a 2-0 week for UW-River Falls, Hayek recorded 14 points off 12 goals and two assists in just five quarters played. She scored her 12 goals off 16 shots on goal and 22 total shots. In UW-River Falls’ 21-3 win over UW-Stout, Hayek scored her 100th career goal, doing so in 35 games played as a Falcon. In addition to her offensive stats, Hayek also recorded seven groundballs and one caused turnover. She anchored the Falcons’ offense in a 2-0 week in which UW-River Falls outscored its opponents 41-6.

Mireles was a force on the defensive side all week. Against Augsburg University (Minn.) April 27, she collected 10 ground balls, caused 7 turnovers, and grabbed 2 draw controls. Against UW-La Crosse and College of Saint Benedict (Minn.), Mireles added 5 ground balls, a caused turnover, and a goal against the Bennies.

Dietz hit .600 (9-for-15) across four games during the week, adding a .647 on-base percentage and .800 slugging percentage. Against No. 19-ranked UW-Whitewater on April 23, she went 6-for-7 with a home run and four RBI, before closing the week by going 3-for-8 with an RBI and a run scored in the Pioneers split with UW-Eau Claire on April 26.

Bougie threw 19 innings across three appearances during the week, accumulating a 0.74 ERA and eight strikeouts, while allowing just two extra-base hits. Her first appearance of the week was a 12-inning start against UW-Stevens Point where she threw 169 pitches and allowed just one earned run on eight hits, while fanning four batters. Bougie held UW-Stout to one run with a strikeout in two innings during the first of the Titans’ pair of wins on April 26, before holding the Blue Devils scoreless across five relief innings with three strikeouts in the finale.

MEN’S TENNIS
West Division - Singles
Ethan Wurtzel, Senior (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie), of UW-Eau Claire
Wurtzel went 4-0 at No. 1 singles during the week to help the Blugolds finish their season on a five-dual win streak. He won three of those matches in straight sets, including a tiebreak defeat of the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.)’s Jonas Abeleda 6-2, 7-6 (2) to clinch a 4-3 victory over the Saints on April 24. In his only match of the week that went three sets, he defeated UW-Superior’s Igor Guetten Chaves 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (3).

Mueller and Schluter went 3-1 in No. 3 doubles as the Blugolds went 4-0 on the week. The duo defeated Cooper Johnson/Brendon Sebring of Hamline University (Minn.) 6-3, Miguel Lopez/Bruno Cabezuelo of Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) 6-4 and Brandon Chu/Blake Haugen of UW-Superior 6-3.

Doornink, Hohman, Williams and Conzemius placed second in the 4x400-meter relay (3:07.76) at the Drake Relays on April 26. They set a school record, breaking the previous mark of 3:07.78 set in 2004. The 3:07.76 ranks second on the NCAA Division III Honor Roll and first in the WIAC.

Yakob Ekoue, Senior (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins), of UW-Eau Claire
Ekoue was the top collegiate performer in the elite discus event at the Drake Relays on April 25. His throw of 197-8 (60.25m) stands as the best in NCAA Division III this season. Ekoue finished only behind Mitch Weber, who competed at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials.

The relay squad set the program record for the third time this season at the Warhawks' Drake Alternative Meet on April 24. Pouska, Mitchell, Huerta and Stennett combined to cross the line in 45.92 seconds - the second-fastest in NCAA Division III this season.
