WIAC Announces Conference-Wide Partnership With Chi Alpha Sigma

MADISON, Wis.--The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) has announced a partnership with Chi Alpha Sigma to welcome all eight institutions into the National College Athlete Honor Society.

“This partnership with Chi Alpha Sigma provides WIAC member institutions the opportunity to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of their student-athletes,” said WIAC Interim Commissioner Maureen Harty. “CAS offers valuable resources and programming for those inducted into this prestigious honor society. The conference office is excited to support this initiative and further celebrate our student-athletes’ commitment to Excellence in Action.”

WIAC student-athletes of junior academic standing or higher who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or better on a 4.0 scale will now be eligible for induction into the National College Athlete Honor Society. Induction ceremonies will be held on each campus at a time determined by the institution. Inductees will also be eligible for additional national awards and postgraduate scholarships offered by Chi Alpha Sigma.

University of Wisconsin-River Falls was the first WIAC institution to join the National College Athlete Honor Society; the Falcons launched the Wisconsin Epsilon chapter in 2016. With the additions of UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater this winter, there are now 18 Wisconsin institutions with active Chi Alpha Sigma chapters.

The WIAC is one of 27 conferences to have its full membership enrolled, joining a list includes the Big Ten, American and Mid-American Conferences from NCAA Division I, along with fellow Division III members in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, American Rivers Conference, and College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, among others.

“I couldn't be happier to welcome the WIAC and all of their member schools into the Chi Alpha Sigma community,” said Kellen Wells-Mangold, executive director of the National College Athlete Honor Society. “The conference has a rich history of high achievement in both academics and athletics, which makes their participation in Chi Alpha Sigma a natural fit and I look forward to championing the success of their student-athletes along with them.”

Chi Alpha Sigma was founded in 1996 by then-DePauw University head football coach Nick Mourouzis. His goal was to provide outstanding student-athletes with an opportunity to become connected within a fraternal association that aligns their educational and athletic successes for a lifetime. The name “Chi Alpha Sigma” was chosen to identify the organization as a national “College Athlete Society.” Any four-year institution with an active membership in the NCAA, NAIA, NCCAA, or USCAA may apply for membership in Chi Alpha Sigma. There are currently more than 500 active chapters across all divisions of college athletics in the United States.
