Men's Soccer 11/6/2025 12:57:53 PM UW-Platteville’s Gutzwiller Named Men’s Soccer Max Sparger Scholar Athlete MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Danny Gutzwiller has been named the recipient of the 2025 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Soccer Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award. A senior from Peoria, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame, Gutzwiller is majoring in finance with a minor in Spanish and maintains a 3.858 grade point average. He is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll and been recognized on UW-Platteville’s Dean’s List and Chancellor’s Honors list. Gutzwiller is a two-time All-WIAC first team selection, claiming honors in 2024 and 2025. He received Coast-2-Coast All-Conference first team honors and Rookie of the Year accolades in 2022 and second team status in 2023. Gutzwiller is a two-time All-Region performer, securing first team honors in 2024 and second team recognition in 2023. He has served as team captain the last two seasons and was selected the team’s Rookie of the Year in 2022. Gutzwiller is a member of the UW-Platteville Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and has studied abroad with the Spanish-American Institute for International Education. He has been an on-campus peer tutor in finance, accounting and statistics, and was a pricing intern for Caterpillar Inc. UW-Eau Claire’s Owen Williams (Sr., Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) and UW-Stevens Point’s Cameron Jochimsen (Sr., Freedom, Wis./Freedom) were also nominated for this year’s scholar-athlete award. The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference for 22 years from 1971-93. He oversaw the transition of the conference from NAIA to full NCAA membership. Sparger arrived at UW-Stout in 1959 and served the institution in a variety of capacities, including as an assistant football and basketball coach, head wrestling coach and head football coach. He served as UW-Stout's athletics director from 1969-71. In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years. The award is based on academic achievements, athletics accomplishments and involvement in other campus activities, organizations and community service projects. # # # # #
