Student-Athlete Spotlight: Matt Scherrman, UW-Oshkosh

Each week during the 2022-23 academic year, the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) will feature two student-athletes (one male and one female) from one of its eight institutions for a “Student-Athlete Spotlight” Q & A segment. The segments will be posted every Thursday and individuals are selected by the institution. The WIAC Student-Athlete Spotlights are presented by Culver's.

Why did you choose UW-Oshkosh?
They offer a good business school and the coaches made it clear they wanted me. I also wanted a school that competes nationally and Oshkosh definitely does.

What causes do you care about?
Young athletes being able to play multiple sports. It’s becoming more uncommon for kids to play multiple sports in high school. For baseball speficially, travel organizations make it difficult.

What do you like most about competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and being a NCAA Division III student-athlete?
You just get to go out and play because you love playing. The WIAC is the best conference for Division III baseball because every weekend, you get to see a great game.

What is your greatest sports moment?
Throwing a no-hitter for my grandpa’s summer league team in Iowa.

Either video games (Madden) or cards.

One word that describes your team?
Fun.

One word that describes you?
Productive.

What is your dream job?
Working in the supply chain department of a sporting good store or industry (Wilson, Nike, Louisville Slugger).

Three things on your "bucket list"?
---Vacation in Bora Bora.
---Get a dog.
---Ski in the Rocky Mountains.

A non-athletic talent that you have is?
This is a tough one. I’ve heard of people say taking naps is a skill, so I’ll go with that.

Do you have any pre-game/pre-event superstitions or rituals? If so, what are they?
I have a few but more than anything, it’s doing the same routine before games. I’ve been wearing the same belt for every game since the freshman year of high school (not going to change that now). Another is getting my wrist taped after we take in and out before every game.
