UW-Whitewater Captures Women’s Golf Championship; UW-Stout’s Filipiak Secures Medalist Honors

REEDSBURG, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater captured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Golf Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Reedsburg Country Club on Oct. 8.
 
The league title is the seventh straight and ninth overall. The nine first-place finishes match UW-Eau Claire for the most in conference history. UW-Whitewater secured this year’s championship with 959 strokes and earned the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship that will be held May 21-24, 2024, at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
 
UW-La Crosse placed second with 977 strokes, UW-Stout third with 978, UW-Platteville fourth with 1,025, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 1,046, UW-Oshkosh sixth with 1,058, UW-Eau Claire seventh with 1,065, and UW-River Falls eighth with 1,078.
 
UW-Stout’s Abbey Filipiak secured the individual title for the second time in her career (2021) with 225 strokes. It is the lowest total for a 54-hole championship in league archives. She becomes the fourth two-time individual champion in WIAC history. Filipiak was also recognized as the Kwik Trip Player of the Year.
 
UW-Whitewater’s Kallie Lux finished second in the 66-player field with 229 strokes. UW-Whitewater’s Lily Sheppard was third with 239 strokes, while UW-La Crosse’s Andrea Schleeper and UW-Stout’s Sydney Grimm tied for fourth with 240. The top five finishers secured first team all-conference accolades.
 
UW-Whitewater’s Ellie Johnson placed sixth with 242 strokes, UW-La Crosse’s Haley Thoeney seventh with 243, UW-La Crosse’s Allison Balduzzi and UW-Whitewater’s Haley Myers tied for eighth with 245, and UW-La Crosse’s Grace Ellison was 10th with 246. Individuals placing sixth thru 10 claimed second team all-conference recognition. Thoeney received Kwik Trip Newcomer of the Year status. A newcomer is defined as a student-athlete who used her first season of participation in women’s golf this season. Transfers are not eligible unless they didn’t participate in women’s golf at their previous institution.
 
UW-Whitewater head coach Andrea Wieland was selected the Kwik Trip Coach of the Year, while UW-Stout’s Abbey Filipiak collected the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Cadie Ash; UW-La Crosse’s Allie McBryde; UW-Oshkosh’s Alyssa Dreher; UW-Platteville’s Jada Chang; UW-River Falls’ Macey Koehler; UW-Stevens Point’s Bree Downie; UW-Stout’s Liz Rohl; and UW-Whitewater’s Emma Norton.
