UW-Whitewater’s Fassbender Secures Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year; Warhawks Coaching Staff Honored

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s David Fassbender has been named the 2021 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year, while UW-Whitewater was selected Coaching Staff of the Year, based on voting conducted by the league coaches.
 
Fassbender wrapped up his career at UW-Whitewater with his best-ever season, winning five of his seven races in 2021, including the WIAC Championship and NCAA North Regional. He finished behind only six different runners for the season and was unbeaten individually against conference competition. After placing first at the conference meet to lead the Warhawks, he won the regional race and an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. At the national meet, Fassbender ran the second-fastest 8-kilometer PR in program history with a 23:57.1, good for a sixth-place finish at the national meet and his third career All-America medal. Fassbender was named North Region Male Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
 
The Warhawks took second at the WIAC Championship for their highest finish since 1999, when it also took runner-up. UW-Whitewater won the NCAA Division III North Regional and placed fifth at the NCAA Division III Championship. Their finish at the national meet match its highest since 1999. The coaching staff includes: head coach Jeff Miller; and assistant coaches BJ Soderman and Amanda Moehling.
