UW-La Crosse Leads Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship

OSHKOSH, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has the lead after the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex on May 1.
 
The Eagles, who have claimed 13 consecutive titles, totaled 126 points through the first six events. UW-Eau Claire is second with 42 points, UW-Stout third with 27, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 19, UW-River Falls fifth with nine, UW-Oshkosh sixth with five, UW-Platteville seventh with four and UW-Whitewater eighth with two.
 
UW-La Crosse won two individual titles during the opening day of events. Maya Evans was victorious in the long jump with a leap of 19-7 (5.97m). She also finished first in the event at the 2024 championship. Julia Zalewski secured the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:34.79.
 
UW-Stout’s Raegan Sorensen was a double winner, placing first in the javelin with a toss of 131-4 (40.04m) and pole vault with a height of 13-0 1/4 (3.97m).
 
UW-Stevens Point’s Faith Wehrman established a conference championship record in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:24.97. Her performance broke a WIAC record that was set in 1991 by UW-Parkside’s Wendy Burman, who posted a time of 35:25.00.
 
UW-Eau Claire’s Kayla Behnke claimed the hammer throw with a fling of 186-8 (56.91m). She is the first individual in program history to win the conference title in the event.
 
Competition at the two-day championship will continue at 11:00 a.m. on May 2.
