UW-La Crosse Grabs First Place At Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has the lead following three days of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship (presented by Culver’s) at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 20.
 
The Eagles have accumulated 597 points through 14 events. Two-time defending champion UW-Eau Claire is second with 562 points, UW-Stevens Point third with 473, UW-Whitewater fourth with 328 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 228.
 
UW-La Crosse won one individual event and one relay competition on day three of the championship. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Tyler Hartmann, Jesse Hammes, Preston Nygaard and Jacob Ketterling posted a first-place time of 1:21.51. Nygaard also won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.57 seconds.
 
UW-Eau Claire had three individual event winners as Emmett Botten claimed the 100-yard butterfly in 48.55 seconds, Henry Botten secured the 400-yard individual medley in 4:06.64 and Derek Stadheim was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:39.83.
 
UW-Stevens Point claimed two individual titles after Scott Jenn won his second straight championship in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 50.19 seconds. Declan Trant successfully defended his one-meter diving title with 473.40 points.
 
UW-La Crosse’s Jonah Elfers received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
An All-Sportsmanship Team was announced for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each team as selected by that team. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Derek Stadheim; UW-La Crosse’s Ethan Pedersen; UW-Oshkosh‘s Charlie Mason; UW-Stevens Point‘s Camden Barwick; and UW-Whitewater’s Zak Nowakowski.
 
The final day of the championship on Feb. 21, will start with prelims at 10:00 a.m., followed by the finals at 5:45 p.m.
