UW-La Crosse Wins Women’s Soccer Tournament Title

LA CROSSE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Soccer Tournament (presented by Culver’s) with a 2-0 triumph over UW-Platteville at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
 
It is fourth straight – and seventh overall – tournament title for UW-La Crosse. The Eagles also secured the conference’s automatic NCAA bid with the victory and will make their eighth NCAA appearance.
 
UW-La Crosse (18-2-1 overall) and UW-Platteville (8-6-6) were meeting in the championship match for the third consecutive season. In this year’s contest, Sera Speltz gave UW-La Crosse a 1-0 lead at 33:35 off Monica Wawrzyn’s assist.
 
UW-La Crosse had nine shots and five corner kicks in the first half, while UW-Platteville totaled seven shots and two corner kicks.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead at 81:38 on Ella Opie’s goal and Jillian Sawadski’s assist. The Pioneers had three shots in the next 1:50, including two on goal, but failed to score as Summer Nicolai recorded a pair of saves. UW-Platteville was held without a shot in the final 6:52. 

UW-La Crosse finished with 16 shots, including eight on goal, and added seven corner kicks.

Nicolai earned the win, recording seven saves, and posted her fourth solo shutout of the season as UW-La Crosse had its 14th shutout of the year.

UW-Platteville totaled 14 shots with seven on goal and matched UW-La Crosse’s seven corner kicks.

Marguerite Mueller recorded six saves for UW-Platteville.
