Kwik Trip Athletes of the Week - Jan. 12

MADISON, Wis.--Following are the WIAC Kwik Trip Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 5 - 11.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Sam Grieger, Junior (Randolph, Wis./Randolph), Guard of UW-La Crosse
Grieger averaged 36.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in two games during the week. He had a school record 46 points at UW-Oshkosh on Jan. 7, breaking Eric Dudek's record of 43 versus UW-Whitewater on Feb. 22, 1995. Grieger added six rebounds and two assists in the game, while going 16-of-28 from the field, including four-of-seven from three-point range, and 10-of-12 at the free throw line. He surpassed 1,000 career points in the game, the 19th player in school history to reach the milestone. Grieger finished with 27 points, five assists and two rebounds at UW-Platteville on Jan. 10. For the week, he shot 55.1 percent (27-of-49) from the field, including 44.4 percent (four-of-nine) from three-point range, and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) at the free throw line.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Ella Mackiewicz, Senior (Shawnee, Kan./Shawnee Mission Northwest), Guard of UW-Platteville
Mackiewicz helped the Pioneers to a pair of wins during the week to improve to 13-1 on the season and 3-0 in WIAC play. She opened the week with nine points, four rebounds, and three steals in a 59-55 road win over No. 24-ranked UW-Eau Claire before dropping a season-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting in a 66-63 victory against UW-La Crosse. Mackiewicz added six more steals in that win and blocked two shots. For the week, she averaged 16.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 4.5 steals per game, while shooting 57.1 percent from the floor.

WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS
Specialist
Kaylee Bateman, Senior (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View), of Winona State University
Bateman came in fourth place in the uneven bars against DI opponent Air Force with a 9.800, which tied the all-time individual uneven bars record for Winona State. This 9.800 led the Winona State bars squad.

Multi-Event
Frankie Jo MacAskill, Freshman (Denver, Colo./Mountain Ridge), of Winona State University
MacAskill posted a fourth-place finish and led the Winona State squad in vault with a score of 9.725 after three Division I Air Force opponents tied for first. MacAskill finished third in the floor exercise and led the Winona State squad with a score of 9.800, and scored a 9.250 on the balance beam to place 13th.

MEN’S ICE HOCKEY
Max Gutjahr, Senior (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly), Goalie of UW-Eau Claire
Gutjahr was instrumental in UW-Eau Claire's weekend sweep of Milwaukee School of Engineering, stopping 51 of the 52 shots he faced in over 124 minutes of playing time. After posting his fourth shutout of the season on Jan. 9, with 30 saves, including overtime, Gutjahr stopped another 21 shots on Jan. 10, as the Blugolds defeated the Raiders 1-0 (overtime) and 3-1. Gutjahr and the Blugold defense successfully defended 11 of the 12 powerplays they faced in the series. Gutjahr sits on top of the conference in goals against average, save percentage and shutouts.

Alexa Niccum, Sophomore (Orono, Minn./Orono), Forward of UW-River Falls
Niccum led the No. 1-ranked Falcons to a pair of road wins on the week at St. Katherine University (Minn.) and No. 8-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.), totaling six points with two goals and four assists. At St. Katherine on Jan. 7, she totaled four points with a goal and three assists and followed up with a goal and an assist at Gustavus on Jan. 10, including the game-winning goal on the power play.

WRESTLING
Landon Church, Junior (Jordan, Minn./Scott West), 149 pounds of UW-Eau Claire
Church led the way during the week for the Blugolds as they captured their fourth straight Budd Whitehills Dual championship. He went 5-0 during the tournament, including key wins over No. 6-regionally ranked Ryan Santiago from Wilkes University (Pa.) and No. 6-regionally ranked Ty Stewart from Springfield College (Mass.). Church was named to the All-Tournament Team at the 149 division and was also tabbed the Most Outstanding Wrestler of the entire weekend.
