Tom Weaver Named Tom Butler Award Recipient

MADISON, Wis.
--Tom Weaver has been named the 2026 recipient of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tom Butler Award.
 
Weaver has broadcast some of the most significant moments in Pointers Sports History and the 2026-27 season will be his 27th as the Voice of Pointers men’s hockey and select women’s hockey games with broadcasts airing on WWSP, WSPT/WKQH/WPCN, WIZD, WDTX Radio and the current Pointers Sports Network with more than 700 games broadcast.
 
During his time at UW-Stevens Point, Weaver was Sports Director at student run WWSP 90FM, Sports Editor for the Pointer and a member of the general staff of UWSP Student Television (STV).  
 
Coverage highlights include the men’s hockey NCAA championship seasons of 1991, 1993, 2016 and 2019 and runner-up finishes in 1992, 2014 and 2015. Women’s hockey from the NCAA national semifinals in 2006 and 2007, and NCAA men’s basketball from the Elite 8 in 1997. He has also provided coverage of Pointers football, women’s basketball, baseball and softball and served as Assistant Sports Information Director for UW-Stevens Point Athletics as a student and following graduation. He also is currently part of the broadcast team for Wausau Area Sports.com which provides coverage of Marathon, Wausau West and Newman Catholic High Schools football, basketball, hockey, baseball, and softball.
 
Weaver also serves on the Pointers Athletics Advisory Board and was named the Mary Ann Nighbor Volunteer of the Year in 2025 by the UW-Stevens Point Alumni Association. He previously served as President of the Wausau Symphony and Band, Wausau East Band Boosters and Chair of the City of Wausau Room Tax Commission.
 
Weaver has worked in health care communications for the past 25 years and currently serves as Manager of System Communications and Community Engagement for Aspirus Health.
 
Weaver graduated from UW-Stevens Point with a bachelor’s degree in communications.
 
The Tom Butler Award has been presented annually since 1998 to a representative of the print or electronic media for outstanding coverage of WIAC athletics (former WIAC sports information directors may also be considered). The league’s sports information directors select the winner. The award is dedicated to Tom Butler, who served the conference faithfully as its sports information director from 1967-96.
