Student-Athlete Spotlight: Ashley Weir, UW-Platteville

Each week during the 2025-26 academic year, the WIAC will feature two student-athletes (one male and one female) from one of its eight institutions for a “Student-Athlete Spotlight” Q & A segment. The segments will be posted every Thursday and individuals are selected by the institution. The WIAC Student-Athlete Spotlights are presented by Culver's.

Why did you choose UW-Platteville?
I chose UW-Platteville because I really felt welcomed by the people on the team and by the coaches. The combination of supportive teammates and coaches created a culture that felt right for me. Providing a program, I felt well-supported in, that I wanted to be a part of, made a huge impact on my decision.

What other clubs/organizations on campus are you involved in?
I am involved in a bible study group run by a former track athlete from UW-Platteville. I also enjoy doing volunteer work at Ruby’s Pantry.

What do you like most about competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and being a NCAA Division III student-athlete?
What I like most about competing in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference is the level of competition. The WIAC is one of the toughest conferences in Division III, and you have to show up with your best effort every game. I enjoy that challenge—knowing that nothing is handed to you and that every team is disciplined, well-coached, and hungry to win. The high level of play pushes me to grow, stay focused, and constantly raise my standards. Being an NCAA Division III student-athlete adds another layer that I really value. Division III athletics are built on balance, commitment, and genuine love for the game. We compete hard, but we also take our academics seriously and find time to build strong relationships with our teammates and community. I like that the environment encourages personal growth on and off the court.

Do you have any words of advice for younger/upcoming student-athletes?
My biggest advice for younger or upcoming student-athletes is to stay consistent and trust the process. Talent is important, but it’s the day-to-day habits—showing up early, working hard when no one’s watching, and staying coachable—that truly sets you apart. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes or fail along the way. Every setback is a chance to learn and get better. Surround yourself with people who push you, listen to your coaches, and always be willing to put in extra work. Most importantly, enjoy the journey. Sports go by fast, so appreciate your teammates, compete with confidence, and remember why you started playing in the first place.
