Rick Shomion was named WIAC Coordinator of Softball Umpires in October 2003. Shomion umpired collegiate softball for over 35 years and worked numerous NCAA Division III regional tournaments, super regional tournaments and Amateur Softball Association national tournaments. He worked the 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2019 NCAA Division III national championships. Shomion has also umpired state softball tournaments for the Minnesota State High School League, including the 2010 - 2012, 2014 - 2016, 2018 - 2019, 2021 and 2023 - 2024 tournaments.
Shomion officiated boys and girls high school hockey in Minnesota for over 30 years. He also officiated men's and women's collegiate ice hockey for over 20 years. He was assigned the 2012 NCAA Division III Women's Ice Hockey Final Four in Rochester, N.Y. Shomion has also worked two boys and two girls state high school hockey tournaments, including the first-ever state girls tournament.
Shomion received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Minnesota. He earned his master’s degree in organizational leadership from the College of St. Catherine (Minn.). Shomion retired in May 2022 from the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He resides in Lilydale, Minn., with his wife of 39 years, Andrea.
