2021 WIAC Kwik Trip Baseball Athletes of the Week


Week of May 10 - 16
Position

Payton Nelson, Senior (Wausau, Wis./West), Outfield of UW-Stevens Point
Nelson hit .647 with four home runs, a 1.471 slugging percentage and 10 RBI in a four-game sweep of UW-Platteville to help UW-Stevens Point clinch the first league title in 10 years. He began the week with a career-high five hits in game one on May 12. He hit two home runs, his first multi-homer game, and tied a career high with five RBI. In game two, Nelson hit another home run and added two doubles with two RBI and three runs. On May 15 in Platteville, he hit another home run in game one with two RBI. In the series finale, Nelson ended his hitting streak against the Pioneers to nine-straight dating back to 2018.

Ginther led the Blugolds to an 11-1 seven-inning victory against No. 3-ranked UW-Whitewater on May 12. In just seven innings, Ginther registered eight strikeouts and only allowed one run and two hits in a 125-pitch performance. Ginther’s 1.29 ERA in the contest is the second lowest in the nine appearances he made during the season.

Week of May 3 - 9
Position

Charlie Szykowny, Junior (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard), Shortstop of UW-Stout
Over six games last week where UW-Stout went 4-0 in conference play and 5-1 on the week, Szykowny hit .500 (14-28), scoring 10 runs and driving in seven runs. He rapped out nine doubles on the week, a move that gave him the school single season record for doubles with 19, recording three in the first game on May 7, and had two doubles in each of three other games. Szykowny had one stolen base in one attempt, but that stolen base set up the game-winning run. With the score tied 8-8 with UW-Platteville on May 8, Szykowny hit a one-out double, stole third, then ended the game when he came home on a wild pitch. Szykowny had at least two hits in each of the six games during the week and has this year reached base in 34 consecutive games and extended his on-base streak to 41 games, stretching back to the 2019 season, his first with the Blue Devils. Szykowny was perfect in the field this week in 33 chances and turned three double plays. On the season, Szykowny is batting .394 (54-137), with 45 runs scored and 24 RBI.

Palmer pitched the first no-hitter for UW-Stout since 2009 and the first complete game no-hitter since 1997 when the lefty threw a nine-strikeout, nine inning 8-0 win over UW-Platteville on May 4. Palmer allowed five walks, but consistently worked his way out of trouble throughout the game. He faced three batters in the first, second, fourth, sixth and eighth innings, allowing only one runner as far as second base. Palmer walked the leadoff hitter in the ninth, struck out the next batter, then forced two consecutive groundouts to shortstop to end the game. For the season, Palmer is 5-3 overall, with an ERA of 2.25. He has 57 strikeouts in 56.0 innings pitched and is allowing an opponent’s batting average of .175.

Matt Scherrman, Freshman (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South), Shortstop of UW-Oshkosh
Scherrman hit .615 (8-13) with five doubles, one home run, eight runs scored and seven RBI as UW-Oshkosh won all four WIAC contests against UW-Platteville. Scherrman tallied two hits in each game, while concluding the week with percentages of 1.231 for slugging and .706 for on-base. He recorded a .857 fielding percentage with two errors in 14 total chances. Scherrman’s best performance of the week occurred during UW-Oshkosh’s 12-2 seven-inning victory over visiting UW-Platteville on May 1. He went 2-for-2 against the Pioneers with two doubles, four RBI and one run scored. Scherrman also went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and one run scored during the Titans’ 11-7 road win over UW-Platteville on April 28, and 2-for-3 with one home run, one stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI during UW-Oshkosh’s 14-4 seven-inning victory over the visiting Pioneers on May 1.

O’Sullivan scattered six hits with no walks and 14 strikeouts over seven innings in UW-Whitewater’s 7-0 triumph over UW-Stout at Miller Stadium on April 28. The game marked his fourth performance of double-digit strikeouts in one game this season, and his 14 strikeouts tied for the fifth-most in one game in program history. O’Sullivan threw 107 pitches and induced six flyouts and two groundouts in the contest.

Week of April 19 - 25
Position

Connor Moroder, Senior (Pewaukee, Wis./Pewaukee), Firstbase of UW-Whitewater
Moroder finished 9-for-17 at the plate (.529 avg.) with four doubles, one home run and 10 RBI during the week to help No. 8-ranked UW-Whitewater to a 4-2 record in games played against UW-Stevens Point. In the Warhawks’ 11-0 win in seven innings in the first game of a doubleheader on April 23, he posted three hits, including two doubles, and knocked in four runs. In the second game, he tallied two hits, including one double, one run scored and two RBI. In the opener on April 24, a 12-5 UW-Whitewater victory, Moroder collected three hits, including one double and one home run, and added two runs scored and four RBI. He contributed one hit and one run scored in the second game, a 17-1 win in seven innings.

Muir pitched a complete game in the No. 8-ranked Warhawks’ 11-1 victory in seven innings at UW-Stevens Point in the first game of a doubleheader on April 20. In the 94-pitch performance, Muir allowed one run on three hits and one walk, while striking out eight to improve to 5-0 for the season. He induced six flyouts and seven groundouts in the contest and helped UW-Whitewater remain tied for first place in the conference standings.

Week of April 12 - 18
Position

Aaron Simmons, Senior (Franklin, Wis./Franklin), Outfield of UW-Stevens Point
Simmons etched his name in the UW-Stevens Point record books, while helping the Pointers to a four-game sweep of UW-La Crosse.  He had multiple hits in both games on April 14, with a home run and a then career-high five RBI in the series opener. Then on April 17 at UW-La Crosse, he belted a grand slam in the second inning of game two. In the fifth inning, he ripped a two-run triple, his program-record 13th career triple, for a career-best six RBI performance. On the week, Simmons hit .389 with four of his seven hits going for extra bases. He drove in 11 runs and scored six times to go with a .889 slugging percentage.

He allowed only three hits without a walk or hit-by-pitch, facing only three batters over the minimum. O’Sullivan has 62 strikeouts in 40 innings this season.

Schmitt hit .571 (8-for-14) in four starts during the week, recording 12 RBI, 10 runs scored, three doubles, two home runs and one triple. He also drew four walks, while adding two stolen bases and two hit-by-pitch. Schmitt recorded a 1.357 slugging and .700 on-base percentage. In a doubleheader at UW-Platteville on April 16, Schmitt went 4-for-9 with seven RBI, five runs, two home runs, one double and one triple. He hit both home runs in UW-La Crosse's 13-6 victory in the nightcap. Against UW-Platteville on April 19, Schmitt finished 4-for-5 with five runs, five RBI, two doubles and four walks. He had the game-winning RBI in the Eagles' victory in the nightcap.

Brandl didn’t allow a run over two appearances during week, helping the No. 16-ranked Warhawks to a 4-0 record. He started the week on April 6, with a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two in UW-Whitewater’s 9-5 victory at UW-Oshkosh. Three days later, he tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout, striking out eight in the Warhawks’ 15-0 home triumph against the Titans in seven innings. Brandl also finished 7-for-21 (.333 avg.) with three doubles and four RBI at the plate over that span.

Week of March 29 - April 4

Scherrman hit .292 (7-24) with a double, two home runs, 14 RBI and five runs scored as UW-Oshkosh compiled a 4-2 record in games against UW-Stevens Point and UW-Eau Claire. Scherrman recorded hits in four of the Titans’ six contests, while concluding the week with percentages of .583 for slugging and .379 for on-base. He also handled all 18 of his fielding opportunities without an error. Scherrman’s best performance of the week came during UW-Oshkosh’s doubleheader sweep of host UW-Eau Claire on April 2. He launched a three-run homer and a grand slam during the first game of the day as the Titans defeated the Blugolds, 18-5, behind Scherrman's eight RBI. Scherrman became the first Titan to drive in eight runs in a contest since Blake Berger at UW-Stout on April 10, 2009. Scherrman, who hit his first collegiate home runs in the opener, then tallied two hits and plated three more runs, including the game winner on a bases-loaded walk with two outs as part of a nine-run ninth inning during a 13-4 UW-Oshkosh victory in the nightcap. Scherrman also added a two-run double in the fourth inning of the second game. Scherrman’s other two-hit game of the week occurred during UW-Oshkosh’s 17-7 eight-inning victory over visiting UW-Eau Claire on March 31. His two hits were singles that scored a run in the first and fourth innings. Scherrman pitched nine innings during two starting assignments for the Titans as well. He hurled five innings with four strikeouts and five runs allowed during UW-Oshkosh’s 7-2 road loss to UW-Stevens Point on March 29 and four innings with four strikeouts and four runs permitted in the Titans’ 13-4 win over UW-Eau Claire on April 2.

In two appearances during the week, Spear didn’t surrender a run and allowed only one hit and four walks, while striking out eight over seven innings to help the No. 16-ranked Warhawks to a pair of wins over UW-La Crosse. In the second game of a doubleheader in La Crosse on April 2, he allowed only two walks without a hit and struck out seven in five innings of work, helping UW-Whitewater post a 19-2 triumph in seven innings. Two days earlier, Spear pitched two scoreless innings in relief to help the Warhawks to a 9-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader against the Eagles. He has not allowed an earned run in 18 innings so far this season.

In four games against UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse during the week, Kelso helped the Pioneers to a 3-1 record by hitting 9-for-16 (.563) with four doubles, four RBI, four runs scored and four stolen bases. He had multiple hits in three games, including a 4-for-4 performance in the second game against UW-La Crosse on March 28. Kelso slashed .563/.632/.813 on the week.

O’Sullivan tallied 17 strikeouts, tied for the second-most in one game in program history, and retired the first 13 hitters of the game via strikeout during the Warhawks’ 10-0 victory over Finlandia University (Mich.) in seven innings at Prucha Field at Miller Stadium on March 26. He allowed only one hit in the contest, was perfect through 6.1 innings and faced the minimum number of batters (21) after UW-Whitewater turned a double play to end the seventh. He induced three groundouts and no flyouts, and did not allow a ball in play until there was one out in the top of the sixth inning. O’Sullivan’s performance helped the No. 18-ranked Warhawks complete a 4-0 week.

McLaughlin was 5-for-6 with three doubles, six RBI and three walks in a season-opening split with UW-Stout on March 20. In an 11-6 win in game two, he produced run-scoring hits in the sixth and seventh innings in a 3-for-3, five RBI performance. McLaughlin slashed .800 / .875 / 1.400 in the two games.

Palmer recorded nine strikeouts, allowing no walks, and went 6.0 innings to get the win in a season-opening 16-2, seven-inning victory over UW-Platteville on March 20. He scattered four hits and allowed two runs, both earned. Over the last three innings he pitched, Palmer did not allow a base runner and struck out five during that stretch.
