2015 WIAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship Preview



University of Wisconsin-La Crosse will strive for a fourth straight title at the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship that will be held at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, Wis., Feb. 19-21.  UW-Whitewater is serving as the host institution for the 44th edition of the women’s championship that will be held in conjunction with the 53rd gathering of the men’s teams.

The Eagles secured the 14th league crown in program history a season ago with 893 points to top UW-Eau Claire's second-place total of 687 points.  UW-Whitewater finished third with 665 points, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 632, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 253 and UW-River Falls sixth with 144.

This year’s championship features 20 student-athletes that have combined to win 26 individual and 29 relay first-place medals.


UW-La Crosse senior Brooke Reynolds claimed Swimmer of the Meet honors a season ago and is the most decorated returnee in this year’s field with six individual and five relay titles.  She has won three straight 100-yard backstroke titles and could become the first individual in conference history to win the event four times.  Reynolds also has claimed two consecutive 200-yard backstroke crowns and added a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly a season ago.

In relay competition, she was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay teams in 2014 and 2012, the 400-yard medley relay squads in 2012 and 2013, and 800-yard freestyle relay unit in 2013.

Junior Sara Zemanovic has won consecutive 100-yard freestyle titles and could become the first individual in WIAC archives to win three straight championships in the event since UW-Eau Claire’s Sara Shimanski (1994-97).  She also was a member of the triumphant 800-yard freestyle relay unit a season ago.  In 2013, Zemanovic claimed the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, while contributing to the winning 400-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay squads.

In 2013, junior Andrea Kolitsch won the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly.  She also claimed the 100-yard butterfly in 2012, when she was a member of the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay units.

Sophomores Anna Landgraf and Katelyn Nadeau were members of last year’s victorious 800-yard freestyle relay team, while senior Leanna Schwartzlow and junior Mikayla Beuch contributed to the first-place 200-yard medley relay squad.  Schwartzlow added a 400-yard medley relay title in 2013 and junior Jordan Anderson secured the three-meter diving crown.

UW-Stevens Point senior Amanda Walker claimed the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and 1,650 yard freestyle a season ago.  She was also a member of the triumphant 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.  Junior Alexa Pronga joined Walker on the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay squads, while adding the 200-yard medley relay title in 2013, along with senior Cassie Matthys.

A year ago, junior Emily Nienhaus was a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay and 400-yard freestyle relay units, while classmate Gemma Pillsburry contributed to the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay squad.

UW-Whitewater senior Amy Spaay has posted back-to-back first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke.  She was a member of last year’s triumphant 400-yard medley relay squad, along with seniors Kelsey Kohlbeck and Kayla Martin.  In 2013, Spaay claimed Swimmer of the Meet honors.  Junior Sierra Becker is the two-time defending champion in one-meter diving and earned Diver of the Meet recognition in 2013.

UW-Eau Claire junior Alison Hable captured the 50-yard freestyle a season ago, while junior Sara Axness claimed the three-meter diving title, as well as Diver of the Meet laurels.  Senior Lisa Reed earned the 1,650-yard freestyle in 2013.
