at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will aim for a sixth consecutive crown at the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Tennis Championship that will be held Oct. 20-21 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The 41st meeting of league squads will also decide six singles champions and three sets of doubles winners.
The team title will be determined by using a combination of the regular-season dual meet standings and the WIAC championship results. The finish in the regular-season standings accounts for one-third of the criteria, while the conference championship accounts for the remaining two-thirds.
Point distribution following the dual meet rotation included: UW-Whitewater (6-0) (7 points), UW-Eau Claire (5-1) (6 points), UW-La Crosse (4-2) (5 points), UW-Oshkosh (3-3) (4 points), UW-River Falls (2-4) (3 points), UW-Stevens Point (1-5) (2 points) and UW-Stout (0-6) (1 point).
The initial day of competition at the conference event will consist of the first two rounds of doubles matches followed by the first round of singles matches. The second day of the championship will feature the final two rounds of singles matches followed by the last round of doubles matches.
The top four teams (following the conclusion of the WIAC championship) will advance to a team tournament that will determine the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship. The team tournament will be held at the site of the overall conference champion prior to the NCAA championship next spring.
UW-Whitewater has captured 12 conference championships, while UW-La Crosse owns 15 and UW-Eau Claire 12.
Individually, UW-Whitewater senior Megan Kasten owns a pair of singles crowns and two doubles titles. She secured a first-place finish at No. 5 singles a season ago after winning No. 3 singles in 2010. Kasten is the two-time defending champion at No. 3 doubles, teaming with junior Jackie Vitale last year and senior Lauren Aguilar in 2010.
Aguilar has won consecutive titles at No. 6 singles, while junior Alexandra Bayliss won the No. 4 singles plaque in 2011 and the No. 5 singles crown at the 2010 championship. Bayliss also added the No. 1 doubles title a season ago.
Senior Sydney Divelbiss also owns three WIAC championships - claiming No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles in 2011, after capturing No. 4 singles in 2010.
Additional returning champions include: UW-Eau Claire senior Taylor Heltne (No. 6 singles - 2009) and UW-La Crosse junior Abby Tresedder (No. 2 doubles - 2010).
Also producing consistent performances for their squads this fall have been: UW-Oshkosh junior Morgan Counts and sophomore Karlie Laveau; UW-River Falls seniors Amanda Drangeid and Jenny Paxton; UW-Stevens Point juniors Rachel Brown and Taylor Weuve; and UW-Stout junior Elizabeth Lehnertz and freshman Kelsey Pedersen.
