UW-Stevens Point Wins Softball Tournament Title

OSHKOSH, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Softball Tournament (presented by Culver’s) with a 5-2 victory over UW-Platteville at Mary Beth Nienhaus Softball Complex on May 9.
 
It is the third tournament title in program history for UW-Stevens Point (30-13) and first since 2001. The Pointers became the first No. 5 seed to win the tournament and secured the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III championship with the win.
 
Against UW-Platteville (24-15), Ashley Lecavalier got the Pointers on the board in the top of the second, with a two-run home run down the left field line scoring Trinity Otto. Morgan Harwood followed with a solo home run for a 3-0 lead.
 
UW-Stevens Point added a run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Hailee Thompson, who led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Kaitlyn Roberts.
 
UW-Platteville scored a pair of the runs in the bottom of the fifth to get within 4-2 on a two-run single by Greta Volkening.
 
UW-Stevens Point added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single by Ella Smith, scoring Roberts, who led off the inning with a single to left field.
 
Morgan Harwood pitched the first 4.1 innings for her 10th win of the season (10-4), while Kodi Rizzo earned her third save of the season after pitching the final 2.2 innings.
 
Caitlin Giacomo had two of UW-Platteville’s three hits in the contest.
