UW-Whitewater Secures Men’s Basketball Title

STEVENS POINT, Wis.
--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater secured at least a share of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men’s basketball regular-season championship with an 80-70 victory over UW-Stevens Point at Bennett Court at Quandt Fieldhouse on Feb. 18.
 
It is the 16th regular-season title in program history and first since 2015. UW-Whitewater (18-6 overall, 9-4 WIAC) can claim the championship outright with a win over UW-River Falls on Feb. 21. UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh, UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point all sit in second place with 8-5 conference records.
 
Against UW-Stevens Point (18-6, 8-5), Collin Madson hit three-pointer to give the Warhawks a 15-12 lead - their largest of the first half. UW-Stevens Point was able to answer back with a lay-up and three to retake the lead. UW-Whitewater would only hold the lead one more time in the first half, at 19-18 with 10:14 to go and the Pointers took a 35-28 lead into halftime.

Kelton McEwen put together an 8-0 run on his own, giving the Warhawks their first lead since 10 minutes to go in the first half. UW-Stevens Point hit two free throws, but McEwen hit another three-pointer to outscore the Pointers 11-2 in just two minutes. 

The Warhawks took their biggest lead of the night with 86-seconds remaining when Madson's three-pointer put UW-Whitewater up 73-61. The Warhawks converted 7-of-8 free throws in the final 60 seconds to seal the victory.

Madison led the Warhawks with 23 points, while adding five rebounds. Luke Bara contributed 14 points and Kelton McEwen added 11. Isaac Verges had a game-high seven rebounds.
 
UW-Stevens Point’s Josiah Butler had a game-high 28 points, while Seth Miron added 15 and Logan Baumgartner and Carter Combs contributed 10 each.
