UW-Superior Wins Men’s Ice Hockey Championship

SUPERIOR, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Superior secured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men’s ice hockey regular-season championship with a 2-1 shootout victory after skating to a 2-2 draw against UW-Stevens Point at Siinto S. Wessman Arena on Feb. 15.
 
It is the ninth regular-season title in program history and second in the last five seasons. UW-Superior (18-4-3 overall, 11-2-2/33 pts. WIAC) also earned the No. 1 seed for the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver’s). The Yellowjackets will face the winner of a first round series between No. 4 seed UW-River Falls and No. 5 seed UW-Stout in a semifinal series Feb. 28-March 1. UW-Stevens Point (18-5-2, 10-3-2/32 pts.) is the No. 2 seed and will meet the winner of No. 6 Northland College/No. 3 UW-Eau Claire in the semifinals. First round series will be held Feb. 21-22. The semifinal winners will square off in the Commissioner’s Cup on March 8, for an automatic NCAA bid.
 
UW-Stevens Point jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Andrew Poulias and Tyler German. UW-Superior got within 2-1 just 39 seconds into the second period on a goal by Reed Stark. Kade Shea tied the contest at 2-2 with a goal at the 10:39 mark of the second period.
 
The game remained scoreless through regulation and the five-minute overtime session. With each team having scored once in the shootout, Carson Riddle broke in and slid a shot underneath the goalie for the victory.
 
UW-Superior’s Jan Skorpik made 14 saves after relieving Jack Boschert in goal at the beginning of the second period. Skorpik improved to 4-1-1 on the season.
 
Alex Proctor made 24 saves for UW-Stevens Point.
