MADISON, Wis.
--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Ashley Kopp was tabbed the Kwik Trip Offensive Player of the Year, while UW-Oshkosh’s Abby Fregien was selected the Kwik Trip Defensive Player of the Year to lead the individuals chosen to the 2022 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Volleyball Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-Platteville’s Kierney McDonald was recognized as the Kwik Trip Newcomer of the Year and UW-Oshkosh’s Jon Ellmann the Kwik Trip Coach of the Year.

Kopp claimed first team recognition for the second straight year and was selected the conference’s Newcomer of the Year a season ago. She is the third Pointer to secure the Offensive Player of the Year distinction, joining Alexis Hartman (2014) and April Gehl (2019). This season, Kopp leads the WIAC with 506 kills (4.44 per set) and 588 points (5.16 per set), while ranking third with 56 service aces. She has reached double figures in kills in all 30 matches, including a season-high 31 against Carthage College (Wis.) on Sept. 24. The 31 kills are the most in the conference this year. Kopp registered a season-best 23 digs against St. Catherine University (Minn.) on Sept. 28, and has produced 22 double-doubles. She eclipsed the career 1,000-kill mark against UW-River Falls on Nov. 1, becoming the ninth Pointer to accomplish the feat.

Fregien is the second Titan to receive the Defensive Player of the Year honor, joining Mandy Trautmann (2015). Fregien tops the conference with 654 digs (5.19 per set) and has recorded double figures in digs in 32 of 34 contests, and at least 20 digs in 16 matches. She had a conference-high 35 digs against Muskingum University (Ohio) on Sept. 16.

McDonald leads the WIAC with .96 blocks per set, while ranking third with a .306 hitting percentage. She is second on the team with 228 kills and 291.5 points. A Newcomer of the Year is defined as a student-athlete who used her first season of participation in women’s volleyball this season. Transfers are not eligible unless they didn’t participate in women’s volleyball at their previous institution.

Repeat selections on the first team from a season ago include: UW-Eau Claire’s Arianna Barrett and Charlie Nelson; UW-Oshkosh’s Riley Kindt and Carissa Sundholm; and UW-Whitewater’s Erin McNeil and Jenna Weinfurt. Barrett also collected first team recognition in 2018, 2019 and 2021, while McNeil was a first team selection in 2018.

UW-Stevens Point’s Emma Peterson and UW-Whitewater’s Morgan Jensen were repeat picks on the all-defensive team from 2021 with Jensen receiving Defensive Player of the Year status. Jensen was also an all-defensive honoree in 2019.

Ellmann has directed the Titans to a 30-4 record this season and second-place finish in the conference standings. The 30 wins are the most since the 2014 campaign and the highest total in Ellmann’s five years. UW-Oshkosh enters the semifinals of the WIAC Tournament on a 19-match winning streak – the second-longest active streak in NCAA Division III.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was announced for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each team.
