All-WIAC Men’s Ice Hockey Team Revealed

--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Zach Zech was chosen the Player of the Year to headline the individuals selected to the 2021 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Ice Hockey Team by the league coaches. In addition, UW-River Falls’ Vilho Saariluoma was tabbed the Newcomer of the Year, while UW-River Falls’ Steve Freeman secured Coach of the Year honors.
 
Zech is the fifth Pointer to receive the top honor in the eight-year history of the award. He ranked third in the WIAC with 11 points, fourth with seven assists and 10th with four goals. Zech contributed two power-play goals, one short-handed goal and one game-winning goal. He had a season-high three points in a 6-3 victory over UW-Stout on Feb. 26.
 
Saariluoma topped the conference with 13 points and eight assists, while ranking third with five goals. He added two power-play goals and one game-winning goal. A Newcomer of the Year is defined as a student-athlete who used his first season of participation in men’s ice hockey this season.
 
Zech was a repeat selection on the first team from a season ago, along with UW-Eau Claire’s Adam Parsells and UW-River Falls’ Christian Hausinger (Player of the Year). Parsells was also a first team honoree in 2018.
 
Freeman collected the coaching honor for the second straight season and 12th time in his career. The Falcons compiled a 6-3-1 record. Freeman completed his 25th season at the helm of the program and is the winning coach in conference history with a 410-233-61 record.
 
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
