UW-Eau Claire Wins Women’s Cross Country Title; UW-Oshkosh’s Moore Claims Individual Crown
WHITEWATER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the 2017 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Cross Country Championship (Presented by Culver’s) at the UW-Whitewater Cross Country Trails on Oct. 28.
The league crown for the Blugolds is the ninth in program archives and first since 2012. UW-Eau Claire earned the first-place finish with 33 points to outdo UW-La Crosse’s second-place total of 59 points. UW-La Crosse was the defending champion. UW-River Falls finished third with 91 points, UW-Platteville fourth with 130, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Stout tied for fifth with 159, UW-Oshkosh took seventh with 140 and UW-Whitewater eighth with 174.
UW-Oshkosh’s Cheyenne Moore secured the individual title for the second straight year, completing the 6,000-meter course in 22:06.3. The Titans have had nine runners combine to win 18 individual conference crowns. A total of 88 runners completed this year’s race.
UW-Eau Claire’s Samantha Slattery finished second with a time of 22:11.1, UW-La Crosse’s Sadie Kroll third in 22:29.1, UW-River Falls’ Abigail Fouts fourth in 22:30.1, UW-La Crosse’s Rebecca Voss fifth in 22:30.5, UW-Eau Claire’s Callie Fischer sixth in 22:30.6 and UW-Eau Claire’s Melody Becker seventh in 22:35.6.
UW-Eau Claire’s Morgan Marek took eighth in 22:36.0, UW-Stout’s Jessica Petruzates ninth in 22:38.1, UW-Eau Claire’s Liz Cisewski 10th in 22:39.6, UW-River Falls’ Linsey Tolkkinen 11th in 22:42.7, UW-Platteville’s Johanna Meister 12th in 22:47.3, UW-Platteville’s Katie Wardinski 13th in 22:53.6 and UW-Stevens Point’s Bailey Wolf 14th in 22:54.5.
UW-Stout’s Katie Repka placed 15th in 22:56.2 and was followed by a quartet of UW-La Crosse runners – Samantha Court 16th in 22:57.3, Kaitlyn McDaniel 17th in 23:04.4, Rachel Jeffers 18th in 23:08.0 and Hannah Beilke 19th in 23:09.2. UW-River Falls’ Nicole Jurik rounded out the top 20 with a time of 23:09.5.
The top seven runners received All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 earned All-WIAC second team accolades. Individuals finishing 15 through 20 claimed honorable mention laurels.
UW-La Crosse’s Kaitlyn McDaniel and UW-Oshkosh’s Cheyenne Moore were named co-recipients of the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Joanne Reiners; UW-La Crosse’s Sadie Kroll; UW-Oshkosh’s Jessica Stamn; UW-Platteville’s Johanna Meister; UW-River Falls’ Kalyn Suhorepetz; UW-Stevens Point’s Bailey Wolf; UW-Stout’s Katie Repka; and UW-Whitewater’s Ashley Paulick.
