UW-Whitewater Captures Fifth Consecutive Wrestling Championship

STEVENS POINT, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater captured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestling Championship (presented by Culver’s) for the fifth consecutive year at UW-Stevens Point’s Quandt Fieldhouse on Feb. 14.
 
The Warhawks secured the 17th league title in program history with 161.50 points to surpass UW-La Crosse’s second-place total of 156 points. UW-Stevens Point finished third with 119.50 points, UW-Platteville fourth with 76, UW-Eau Claire fifth with 53.50 and UW-Oshkosh sixth with 49.50.
 
UW-Whitewater claimed five individual championships enroute to its first-place finish. Tom Gerszewski won the second title of his career after a 10-3 triumph over UW-Stevens Point’s Logan Hermsen at 165 pounds. He claimed the 157-pound crown a season ago.
 
Matt Adcock was victorious at 141 pounds with a 6-3 decision over UW-La Crosse’s Cody See, while Isaiah Vela earned the 149-pound title with a technical fall of 18-3 (4:27) over UW-Eau Claire’s Roy Munroe.
 
The Warhawks also received first-place performances from Brandon Arteaga at 157 pounds and Nicholas Bonomo at 184 pounds. Arteaga beat teammate Kory Jauch 6-3, while Bonomo pinned UW-La Crosse’s Alex Friedman at 3:44.
 
UW-La Crosse’s Tyler Schneider earned a 10-0 major decision over UW-Stevens Point’s Dan Squires at 174 pounds. He won the 165-pound title at last year’s championship. The Eagles posted two additional first-place finishes as Sean Ward claimed the 197-pound crown and Clay Broze was victorious at 285 pounds. Ward beat UW-Platteville’s Bryant Etherton 8-2, while Broze posted a 8-4 triumph over UW-Platteville’s D’Andre Johnson.
 
UW-Platteville’s Scott Arneson was selected the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet after winning the 133-pound title by pinning UW-Whitewater’s Joe Brodman in 6:55.
 
UW-Stevens Point’s Ben Vosters claimed the 125-pound championship with a 3-2 decision over UW-Whitewater’s Zac Denny.
 
UW-Whitewater head coach Ned Shuck was chosen the Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year, while UW-Stevens Point’s Jared Kust received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire's Tyler Henke; UW-La Crosse's Derek Weinmann; UW-Oshkosh's Hunter Mulock; UW-Platteville's Bryant Etherton; UW-Stevens Point's Dan Squires; and UW-Whitewater's Corey Meyer.
