UW-La Crosse Wins Fourth Straight Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Crown
LA CROSSE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse collected its fourth straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship after two days of competition at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex on May 2.
The Eagles compiled 233.83 points to secure the 30th first-place finish in program archives. UW-Eau Claire placed second with 131 points, UW-Oshkosh third with 121, UW-Stevens Point fourth with 105, UW-Whitewater fifth with 98.33, UW-Platteville sixth with 74.50, UW-Stout seventh with 66, UW-River Falls eighth with 16.33 and UW-Superior ninth with 11.
UW-La Crosse posted four first-place finishes during the second day of competition, including championship meet performances in the 100-meter dash, 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter intermediate hurdles and triple jump. Marissa Mahr became the second individual in WIAC history to win four straight 400-meter intermediate hurdles titles with a time of 1:01.08, joining former Eagle Luanne Bruss (1990-93).
Meg Heafy had a first-place time of 11.58 in the 100-meter dash, while Erin McCauley had time of 14.09 in the 100-meter hurdles and Bria Halama secured the triple jump with a leap of 40-10 1/4. Laura Mead was victorious in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:45.29.
UW-Oshkosh’s Kasey Ederer claimed her third consecutive crown in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 1/2, joining UW-Whitewater’s Shelby Demos (2010-12) as the only three-time winners of the event. Jecel Klotz successfully defended her title in the shot put with a heave of 48-8, while Kylee Verhasselt won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:11.08.
UW-Eau Claire won both relay events as Kelsey Worachek, Jessie Reineck, Lindsey Laufenberg and Carly Fehler posted a conference meet record time of 46.35 in the 4x100-meter relay. Steph Rouse, Brooke Patterson, Sarah Glidden and Jess Rupnow combined for a first-place time of 3:48.50 in the 4x400-meter relay. Fehler also produced a conference meet record time of 23.94 enroute to winning the 200-meter dash, while Lucy Ramquist was victorious in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:21.93.
UW-Stout’s Meagan Ward had a conference meet record of 4,934 points for a first-place finish in the hepathlon, while UW-Whitewater’s Lexie Sondgeroth had a meet record time of 55.08 to emerge victorious in the 400-meter dash and UW-Stevens Point’s Kadie Flynn won the discus with a toss of 150-4.
UW-Whitewater’s Shelby Mahr received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
Named to the Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team were: UW-Eau Claire’s Monica Emerson; UW-La Crosse’s Julie Merkes; UW-Oshkosh’s Stephanie Knutson; UW-Platteville’s Abigail Merriam; UW-River Falls’ Anna Reimer; UW-Stevens Point’s Maggie Martin; UW-Stout’s Cheyenne Gray; UW-Superior’s Vicki Vinokur; and UW-Whitewater’s Mary Kate Bernier. The team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
