UW-Stevens Point Secures 16th Straight Men’s Swimming & Diving Title

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point secured its 16th straight title following the conclusion of three days of competition at the 2015 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming & Diving Championship at Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 21.
 
The Pointers captured the 19th first-place plaque in program history with 920 points to exceed the 697 points compiled by second-place UW-La Crosse.  UW-Whitewater placed third with 693 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 594 and UW-Oshkosh fifth with 172.
 
UW-Stevens Point collected three individual crowns and one relay title during the third day of events.  Sam Jekel won the 100-yard freestyle for the second straight year with a time of 45.98, while Evan Catani successfully defended his title in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:14.09.  Joe Hollman was victorious in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:07.25.
 
Jekel also contributed to the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team that produced a time of 3:02.30.  He was joined by Andrew King, Kyle McNair and Hans Peters.
 
UW-Whitewater’s Josh Kanute captured the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.58 and was selected the Swimmer of the Meet for his efforts during the championship.  Joe Devroy became the third individual in WIAC archives to win four consecutive 200-yard backstroke titles, posting a conference meet record time of 1:48.77.  UW-Stevens Point’s Juan Cabrera (1990-93) and Rob Donisch (2006-09) also accomplished the feat.
 
UW-La Crosse’s Justin Bublitz secured the three-meter diving crown for the second straight year with a score of 532.00.  He earned Diver of the Meet recognition for the third consecutive season.
 
UW-Whitewater’s Joel Rollings was selected the Coach of the Year, while UW-La Crosse’s Stephen Hanko received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

200-Yard Breaststroke:  Joe Hollman (UW-Stevens Point), 2:07.25
200-Yard Butterfly:  Josh Kanute (UW-Whitewater), 1:52.58
