UW-La Crosse Holds Lead At Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship

OSHKOSH, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, the two-time defending champion, has the lead following the first of two days of competition at the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the Oshkosh Sports Complex on May 2.
The Eagles compiled 58 points during the first day of events. UW-Stout is second with 41 points, UW-Stevens Point third with 38, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 35, UW-Whitewater fifth with 30, UW-Eau Claire sixth with 29.50, UW-Platteville seventh with 21, UW-River Falls eighth with 19.50 and UW-Superior ninth with one.
UW-Plattevile’s Emily Kjos won the javelin for the second straight season with a toss of 135-5. UW-Stout’s Jessika Smith claimed the long jump with a leap of 18-11 1/4. She also won the event at the 2011 championship.
UW-Oshkosh’s Melanie Bricker secured the hammer throw with a fling of 179-6 and UW-Stevens Point’s Samantha Haas was victorious in the pole vault with a height of 12-2 3/4.
UW-Eau Claire’s Katryna Williams earned the 3,000-meter steeplechase title with a time of 11:12.73, while UW-River Falls’ Beth Riihinen posted a first-place finish in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 37:32.39.
The UW-Oshkosh foursome of Alex Mahoney, Kristen Linzmeier, Kylee Verhasselt and Christy Cazzola teamed to win the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 9:12.68.
