UW-Whitewater Captures Third Consecutive Wrestling Title

--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater captured its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) wrestling title with a 35-9 triumph over UW-La Crosse at UW-La Crosse’s Mitchell Hall on Feb. 15.

The conference crown is the 15th in program history for the Warhawks.  UW-Whitewater advanced to the title match with a 38-9 win over UW-Stevens Point in round two, while UW-La Crosse posted a 37-8 victory over UW-Oshkosh to secure its spot in the first-place match.

In the third-place match, UW-Stevens Point emerged with a 20-18 decision over UW-Oshkosh, while UW-Platteville beat UW-Eau Claire 31-18 in the fifth-place match.

UW-Oshkosh’s Nazar Kulchytskyy was voted the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet, while UW-Whitewater head coach Tim Fader received the Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year Award.  UW-Eau Claire’s Luke Ortscheid claimed the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.  Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Nathaniel Behnke; UW-La Crosse’s Ryan Weinmann; UW-Oshkosh’s Tyler Wetenkamp; UW-Platteville’s Bryant Etherton; UW-Stevens Point’s Lance Fabry; and UW-Whitewater’s Mitchell Elmer.
