Warhawks Win Eighth Consecutive Women’s Tennis Crown

--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater claimed its eighth straight first-place finish at the 2014 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Tennis Championship following two days of competition at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Oct. 26.

The Warhawks earned the 15th conference title in program history with 20 overall championship points.  UW-La Crosse placed second with 19 points, UW-Eau Claire third with 15, UW-Oshkosh fourth with 12, UW-Stevens Point fifth with nine, UW-River Falls sixth with six, and UW-Stout seventh with three.

The team title was determined by using a combination of the regular-season dual-meet standings and the WIAC championship results.  The finish in the regular-season standings accounted for one-third of the criteria, while the conference championship accounted for the remaining two-thirds.

At the two-day league championship, UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater compiled 56 points (13 overall championship points), while UW-Eau Claire was third with 48 (10), UW-Oshkosh fourth with 34 (8), UW-Stevens Point fifth with 26 (6), UW-River Falls sixth with 18 (4) and UW-Stout seventh with 14 (2).

Point distribution following the dual-meet rotation included:  UW-Whitewater (6-0) (7 overall championship points); UW-La Crosse (5-1) (6); UW-Eau Claire (4-2) (5); UW-Oshkosh (3-3) (4); UW-Stevens Point (2-4) (3); UW-River Falls (1-5) (2) and UW-Stout (0-6) (1).

UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater advance to the team tournament in the spring to determine the conference's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship.  The Warhawks will host the four-team event.

UW-Whitewater earned three singles crowns and two doubles titles at the conference championship. 
Alexandra Talyansky earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over UW-La Crosse’s Bryanne Blanton at No. 3 singles, while Alicia Beck posted a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (3) win over UW-Eau Claire’s Madison Rossebo at No. 4 singles.  At No. 5 singles, Jillian Wallace secured a 6-1, 6-2 victory over UW-La Crosse’s Kendra Woyahn.

In doubles competition, the Warhawks won the No. 1 flight as Bridgid McGuire and Alicia Beck upended UW-La Crosse’s Bridget Bellissimo and Kimmy Mrozek 8-5.  At No. 2 doubles, Amy Upthagrove and Jillian Wallace posted an 8-5 triumph over UW-La Crosse’s Bryanne Blanton and Ali Bublitz. 

UW-La Crosse won two singles crowns and one doubles event.  Bridget Bellissimo earned the No. 1 singles title with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 triumph over UW-Whitewater’s Bridgid McGuire, while Kimmy Mrozek claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win over UW-Whitewater’s Amanda Dick at No. 2 singles.

The No. 3 doubles unit of Jenny Graham and Rachael Wabers earned an 8-2 victory over UW-Stevens Point’s Rosie Buckley and Hannah Dexheimer.

UW-Eau Claire’s Sarah Henderson claimed the No. 6 singles crown with a 7-5, 6-3 triumph over UW-La Crosse’s Rachael Wabers.

UW-Whitewater head coach Frank Barnes was selected the Coach of the Year, while UW-Eau Claire’s Madeline Johnson received the Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.  Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Madison Rossebo; UW-La Crosse’s Kendra Woyahn; UW-Oshkosh’s Erica Van Riper; UW-River Falls’ Hannah Klimek; UW-Stevens Point’s Molly Hendries; UW-Stout’s Cortney Hallahan; and UW-Whitewater’s Alicia Beck.
