MADISON, Wis.--For the second consecutive year, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Sam Barber has been selected the Player of the Year to lead the 10 individuals selected to the 2013 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Basketball Team by the league coaches, while UW-Oshkosh’s Brad Fischer was picked the Coach of the Year.
Barber is the third individual in conference history to claim the Player of the Year honor in back-to-back seasons, joining former Pointer Amanda Nechuta (2004-05) and UW-Stout’s Kelsey Duoss (2006-07). She leads the WIAC with 18.7 points per game, while placing second with a .427 three-point field goal percentage, fourth with 7.3 rebounds per game, fifth with 31 blocked shots, sixth with a .484 field goal percentage, seventh with 52 steals and ninth with a .802 free throw percentage.
Barber has reached double-figures in scoring in 27 of 28 games played this season, including at least 20 points in 10 contests. She had a career-high tying 34 points against UW-Whitewater on Feb. 24, to help the Pointers to the WIAC Tournament title.
Repeat selections on the first team from a year ago included: UW-Whitewater’s Cortney Kumerow and Kaitlyn Thill.
UW-Superior’s Sally Linzmeier was chosen to the All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive season, while UW-Whitewater’s Kaitlyn Thill earned the honor for the third straight year.
Fischer claimed the coaching honor after directing the Titans to a second-place finish in the WIAC standings. In his first season at the helm, Fischer led the squad to largest one season improvement in conference history. The Titans went from 1-15 record in 2012 to a 12-4 mark in 2013.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
