EAU CLAIRE, Wis.
--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater collected its second straight title at the 2013 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Wrestling Championship at UW-Eau Claire’s McPhee Physical Education Center on Feb. 17.

The Warhawks claimed the 14th conference championship in program history with a 23-10 triumph over UW-La Crosse in the title match.  UW-Whitewater advanced to the championship match with a 42-7 win over UW-Platteville in round two, while UW-La Crosse earned a 22-12 second round win over UW-Stevens Point to earn its spot in the first-place match.

This year’s championship marked the first time in the 58-year history of the event, that the WIAC champion was crowned using a dual-meet format.  The six teams earned seeds based on their performances in the regular-season round robin WIAC schedule.

In the third-place match, UW-Stevens Point emerged with a 35-7 decision over UW-Platteville, while
UW-Oshkosh posted a fifth-place finish after a 30-22 victory over UW-Eau Claire.

UW-La Crosse’s Adam Sheley collected the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet plaque and Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award.

UW-Stevens Point head coach Johnny Johnson was selected the Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.  Named to the squad were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Matt Koch; UW-La Crosse’s JR Lewis; UW-Oshkosh’s Tyler Wetenkamp; UW-Platteville’s Cole Ferguson; UW-Stevens Point’s Shane Sweeney; and UW-Whitewater’s Joe Meylor.

Qualification for the NCAA Division III Championship will be based on regional competition held March 2.  UW-Eau Claire, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville will compete in a regional hosted by Augsburg College (Minn.), while UW-La Crosse, UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater will travel to Elmhurst College (Ill.).  The national championship will be held March 15-16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
