All-Sports Award Winners Announced

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater captured two of the three categories, while UW-Eau Claire earned the remaining crown in the 2011-12 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) All-Sports Award standings. The Warhawks secured the combined award and men’s trophy, while the Blugolds claimed the women’s plaque.
The combined award for UW-Whitewater is the third in the last five seasons. The Warhawks totaled 85.5 points and were followed by: UW-Eau Claire (82); UW-La Crosse (79); UW-Stevens Point (72); UW-Oshkosh (69.5); UW-River Falls (51); UW-Platteville (50.5); UW-Stout (45); and UW-Superior (27).
UW-Whitewater totaled 41 points to capture the 10th men’s plaque in school history and fourth in the last seven seasons. During the 2011-12 academic year, the Warhawks earned men’s WIAC championships in football, basketball, soccer and wrestling. UW-Whitewater was followed in the standings by: UW-La Crosse (39); UW-Oshkosh (33.5); UW-Stevens Point (32.5); UW-Platteville (26.5); UW-Eau Claire (25); UW-River Falls (20.5); UW-Stout (15.5); and UW-Superior (14.5).
UW-Eau Claire won its sixth consecutive - and 12th overall - women’s trophy after accumulating 49.5 points. The Blugolds secured women’s league crowns in basketball, cross country, golf, softball and volleyball. UW-Eau Claire was trailed in the standings by: UW-Whitewater (44.5); UW-La Crosse (40); UW-Stevens Point (39.5); UW-Oshkosh (36); UW-River Falls (28.5); UW-Stout (28); UW-Platteville (23); and UW-Superior (12.5).
The three All-Sports Awards are given annually by the conference. Points for the awards are given according to the final conference standings in each sport on a 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis, or 8-7-6, etc., depending on how many schools compete in each sport. Either (but not both) indoor or outdoor track and field are included in the calculations and the awards are determined on the basis of the lowest number of sports offered by any WIAC institution in each category.
