UW-Oshkosh Holds First Day Lead At Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship
MENOMONIE, Wis.--Defending conference champion, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, holds the lead at the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship following the first of two days of competition at UW-Stout’s Sports and Fitness Center on Feb. 24.
The Titans have accumulated 59 points, while UW-La Crosse sits in second place with 45. UW-Whitewater is third with 36 points, UW-Stout fourth with 29, UW-Stevens Point fifth with 25, UW-Eau Claire sixth with 20, UW-River Falls seventh with 15, UW-Platteville eighth with four and UW-Superior ninth with one.
UW-Oshkosh secured a pair of individual titles and one relay crown on the first day as Danielle Carrigan was victorious in the pole vault for the second straight year with a height of 12-4. Breanna Strupp earned the shot put with a heave of 48-4 1/2.
The foursome of Tori Johnson, Rachel Westover, Katelyn Brooks and Christy Cazzola won the distance medley relay with a time of 12:29.52.
UW-Whitewater’s Shelby Demos became the first repeat winner in the high jump since UW-La Crosse’s Katie Arnes in 1998-99. Demos produced a conference meet record height of 5-9 3/4 enroute to this year’s crown.
UW-Stevens Point’s Julia Colling won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17:48.32, while UW-Stout’s Jessika Smith posted a first-place mark of 18-1 1/2 in the long jump.
