UW-Stevens Point Holds First Day Lead At Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship

BROWN DEER, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, the 12-time defending conference champion, splashed to the advantage following the first of three days of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center on Feb. 16.
The Pointers compiled 272 points, while UW-La Crosse is second with 236, UW-Whitewater third with 163, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 162, UW-Oshkosh fifth with 114 and UW-River Falls sixth with 52.
UW-Stevens Point’s Joey Clapp won the 50-yard freestyle for the second straight year with a time of 20.45, while teammate Luuk Dekkers successfully defended his title in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:40.47
Clapp was also a member of both winning relay squads. He teamed with Sam Davy, Ryan Farmer and Eric Emerson to emerge victorious in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a conference meet record time of 1:21.87. Farmer, Ian Girdley and Alex Loftus joined Clapp in the 400-yard medley relay with a first-place time of 3:21.41.
UW-Oshkosh’s Phil Devine captured the three-meter diving competition for the fourth consecutive season with a conference meet record 600.35 points. He is the third individual in WIAC listings to win four three-meter titles, joining UW-Eau Claire’s Jim Brennan (1978-81) and Chris Hansman, who spent the 2001 season at UW-Stevens Point, then attended UW-Oshkosh from 2002-04.
UW-Eau Claire’s Alex Card secured the 200-yard individual medley with a conference meet record mark of 1:51.21.
