Jack Miller served as UW-Whitewater’s chancellor from 1999-2005 and oversaw completion of the $14.5 million Kachel Fieldhouse, home of UW-Whitewater indoor track & field and practice facility for multiple teams. During his tenure, the Warhawks won the first (women’s volleyball in 2002) of 16 national championships in a 15-year span. He headed a highly successful campaign to raise money for a new College of Business and Economics building and was a global ambassador for Warhawk Athletics and UW-Whitewater. Miller was the chair of the Board of Governors of The Renaissance Group, a national organization of 37 universities devoted to training the next generation of educators.
Miller was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Outstanding Leadership Award from the Brothers of the Academy for commitment to access, retention and graduation of underrepresented students in higher education in 2005, and the Pacesetter Award from the National Academic Advisory Association as CEO of the Year in 2003. His annual study of America’s Most Literate Cities was published by USA Today and recognized in more than 100 of the largest daily newspapers and on National Public Radio.
Miller earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ohio University, master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University and Ph.D. in education from Purdue University (Ind.). He passed away in April 2018.
