Ted Whereatt was an outstanding student-athlete at UW-Superior, but his most indelible mark came during an illustrious coaching career.  He was the head football coach and men’s basketball coach for 14 seasons between 1930 and 1947, missing three years for military service.  On the football field, he compiled a record of 63-28-13 and led the Yellowjackets to five conference championships.  The 1936 and 1937 championship teams didn’t allow a single point.

In basketball, Whereatt guided the Yellowjackets to conference titles in 1934, 1935, 1939 and 1941, with the 1941 team qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.  Whereatt is a member of an exclusive club of coaches that led teams to conference championships in football and basketball in the same year.

After his time at UW-Superior, Whereatt went to Indiana University where he enjoyed a long career as a coach and administrator, serving first as freshmen football coach before becoming an assistant dean.  The university annually presents the Ted Whereatt Academic Excellence Award to a member of its football program.  In 1963, Whereatt was inducted into the UW-Superior Hall of Fame.  The baseball field on campus is named in his honor.

Whereatt earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He passed away in May 1970.
