UW-La Crosse Secures Wrestling Title
PLATTEVILLE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse captured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Wrestling Championship (presented by Culver’s) at UW-Platteville’s Williams Fieldhouse on Feb. 10.
The Eagles collected the 16th league crown in program history - and first since 2011 - with 160 points to surpass the 108 points compiled by five-time defending champion UW-Whitewater. UW-Platteville and UW-Stevens Point tied for third with 97.50 points, while UW-Eau Claire was fifth with 89 and UW-Oshkosh sixth with 75.
UW-La Crosse claimed four individual championships enroute to the first-place finish. Dustin Weinmann was chosen the John Peterson Wrestler of the Meet after winning the 141-pound title with a 13-0 major decision over UW-Oshkosh’s Kody Azarian.
Mason Geary posted a 7-5 decision over teammate Kal Gerber to win the 149-pound crown, while Richard Carlson emerged with the 174-pound title after an 8-1 decision over UW-Platteville’s Jon Goetz. Michael Otomo beat UW-Eau Claire’s Cecil Philson 10-4 to capture the 197-pound championship.
UW-Whitewater had three individual champions after Zac Denny won the 125-pound crown with a 7-2 decision over UW-Eau Claire’s Zackary Sirny. Joe Brodman posted a 10-6 decision over UW-La Crosse’s Ryan Weinmann to claim the 133-pound title and Jordan Newman captured the 184-pound championship with a 10-2 major decision over UW-Platteville’s Grant Wedepohl.
UW-Stevens Point’s Logan Hermsen claimed the 165-pound title with a 6-4 decision over UW-Eau Claire’s Toby Mosley. Donny Ralston produced an 8-0 major decision over UW-La Crosse’s Konrad Ernst to win the 285-pound championship.
At 184 pounds, UW-Oshkosh’s Mark Choinski emerged with a first-place finish after a 13-4 major decision over UW-La Crosse’s Jackson Shoen.
UW-La Crosse head coach Dave Malecek was chosen the Mertz Mortorelli Coach of the Year. UW-La Crosse’s Alex Friedman received the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete Award, which is sponsored by Badgerland Financial.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire's Zackary Sirny; UW-La Crosse's Dustin Weinmann; UW-Oshkosh's Joe Pelkey; UW-Platteville's D’Andre Johnson; UW-Stevens Point's Moziah Clark; and UW-Whitewater's Joe Brodman.
