UW-Whitewater's Schaefer Selected Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete
MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Kalla Schaefer has been named the recipient of the 2011 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Judy Kruckman Women’s Tennis Scholar-Athlete Award.
A senior from Madison, Wis. (Memorial), Schaefer owns a 3.77 grade point average and is majoring in psychology with a minor in social work. She is a three-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete and a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll. Schaefer has been recognized on UW-Whitewater’s Dean’s List and received the Academic Achievement Award each year.
A team captain, she is a two-time WIAC champion at No. 1 singles - winning titles in 2008 and 2011. Schaefer is also a three-time winner at No. 1 doubles with first-place finishes in 2008, 2009 and 2011. She is the first-ever player in WIAC history to capture an ITA regional championship, accomplishing the feat in 2008 and 2001.
Schaefer tops the Warhawk record book for career wins in doubles, while placing second in career wins at No. 1 singles. She is also second on the school’s single-season chart with most wins at No. 1 singles and combined singles/doubles victories. A team MVP for the 2008-09 season, she claimed UW-Whitewater’s Marty Van Steenderen Sportswoman of the Year honor for 2009-10.
Schaefer is a member of UW-Whitewater’s SPILL (Supporting Peers In Laidback Listening) Club and Psychology Club. She has served as volunteer for Kids Night Out, Woman In Sports Day, Make A Difference Day and Reading With The Warhawks.
UW-La Crosse’s Katherine Schultz (Sr., Racine, Wis./Washington Park) was also nominated for this year’s award.
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Judy Kruckman who served as Assistant Commissioner for the WIAC from 1996-98. Prior to this appointment, she functioned as Commissioner of the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from October, 1984 - September, 1996.
In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, she must be in her last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
