Women’s Cross Country Award Winners Announced
MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s Christy Cazzola has been named the 2010 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year, while UW-Eau Claire’s Dan Schwamberger has been selected the Coach of the Year based on voting conducted by the league coaches.
A sophomore from Kaukauna, Wis., Cazzola recorded top-four finishes in every race she competed during the 2010 campaign. She capped her season by taking fourth place with a time of 21:18 at the NCAA Division III Championship. Cazzola also came in the fourth position at the regional competition, posting a 6,000-meter standing of 21:34.
Her best individual listing of the year came against the league’s elite. Cazzola clocked a 22:15 to finish first among 102 runners at the WIAC Championship.
This is the second consecutive season that UW-Oshkosh owned the WIAC’s Athlete of the Year with Ayla Mitchell winning the award in 2009.
Schwamberger, in his fourth year in charge of the Blugolds, claimed the coaching award for the fourth consecutive season after directing UW-Eau Claire to the WIAC championship, NCAA Division III Midwest Regional title and a fourth-place finish at the NCAA Division III Championship. His string of four straight coaching honors matches UW-Oshkosh’s Deb Vercauteren for the longest in conference history. She won four straight trophies from 1986-89 and 1993-96.
